For years long before the entrance of the gas and electric dryers, people used the good old sun, fresh air to dry there clothes, this was done by stretching a rope, cord, twine or whatever between two trees, sticks, or poles. The clothes line would be low enough to reach but high enough so the clothes would not touch the ground.

Once the clothes have been washed they were placed on the clothes line using an item called a clothes pin, these were commonly made from wood in the early days and now some are made with plastic with the use of a spring. The clothes lines were usually found in the back yard, and some clothes lines were so long, that they needed to place a wooden prop in the middle of the line to keep the wash off the ground.
